Face of America Ride and emergency austere medicine course

If you heard Saturday's radio show or were at the Tuesday Tactical Training League last week, you heard Dr. Greg Kennebeck discuss both of the topics in the subject. He and Team CrisisED will be riding this weekend from Washington DC to the historic battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The two day 100+ mile ride honors our military — disabled, veterans and active duty — and celebrates the American Spirit.

On the other topic, as an emergency physician and crisis educator, Greg has volunteered to put together a course to cover topics of interest to SimTrainer members. Options range from treating gunshot wounds, to dealing with severe lacerations, to preparing for survival under major crisis conditions. If there are topics you would like to have covered, please send an email with suggestions.

Courses of this scope easily cost $150 per day, but because of his status on active duty with the Air Force, he can neither charge nor receive compensation for teaching this course. If you're interested in attending a class, you can still make a contribution to something meaningful - the Team CrisisED ride to support Wounded Warriors on the ride and beyond. The team only has a few days left to reach their goal.

Glock Armorer's Course - Postponed

SimTrainer was planning to host a Glock Armorer's Course on Thursday, March 1, 2012, from 8AM-5PM. We needed ten more people to sign up that week for Glock to justify coming to Dayton. We did get enough people, but not in time. The course costs $195 and will teach you how to safely use and maintain your weapon in this one-day class. Includes field stripping and reassembly, detail disassembly and reassembly of the slide and receiver, full fire control system configuration, options, sights and tools, and diagnostics. You will need safety glasses for eye protection.

If you own a Glock, this is a great course for learning more about how your weapon works and how to make sure you can keep it working.

We will send out another notice when we have a new date. Be sure to sign up quickly so we can be sure to have enough people for Glock to hold the clas.

Watch for the anti-gun SuperBowl Ad

Brace for incoming!

New York Mayor Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Menino have teamed up to create a SuperBowl ad pushing the Mayors Against Illegal Guns organization and their agenda to declare all personally owned firearms as illegal and have them banned (although they�re not honest enough to declare that as their intent).

They claim that over 600 mayors across the country side with them.

Anyone have an idea how many mayors there are in this country? The 2010 Census data shows there are 1,931,038 cities and towns in the US.

Assuming "over 600" also means "fewer than 700" mayors are listed as supporting MAIG, and even assuming all the mayors on his list actually understood what they were supporting when signing up (known to be false in several cases), that works out to about 0.036% of cities and towns.

Do a third of one tenth of one percent of mayors really deserve the attention of millions of SuperBowl fans?

Likely not, but that won't change the media's emphasis on this.

The biggest lie in the entire ad is just zipped by at the start...these two mayors support the Second Amendment? Oh, please! What part of "shall not be infringed" applies in New York and Boston, mayors?

Just a heads up for your SuperBowl parties this weekend - have some facts ready! While you're at it, post some comments on their YouTube video of the ad to let them and others know we're not buying their schtick...

On a happier note, many of our classes have filled already for the first quarter of 2012. We're really glad to see so many people looking to get training - from First Shots through Advanced Handgun!

In particular, we had no available slots for First Shots until mid-March. We hate to make people wait when they're looking to get started! Enter a THIRD First Shots class in February - Saturday morning, Feb 18, 9AM-Noon. We added that class late in January, and it's already over half full! Of course, that also means the range will be closed that day from about 10:30-11:30, but will reopen as soon as we're finished in the range and move back to the classroom.

Jeff and Mark will be on the air this week from the HomeWorld Show at the Airport Expo center, so come out and join us there!

We will off the air next week as Dayton Flyer Basketball takes over the time slot, but we will also be up at the Second Amendment Freedom Conference in Dublin, OH. If you haven't heard about that event, it's not too late to sign up.

Advanced Handgun Series Added

Course list update announcement!

We have had a huge demand this winter for the Advanced Handgun Series. We expanded the number of spaces in Handgun 1 - Mastering Marksmanship Fundamentals class, but that still didn't get everyone in. A second set of classes this quarter is now available. The added classes are listed on the web site and available at the range for registration. We had to fit them in around other scheduled classes, so days and times vary. The first added class for Handgun 1 is THIS WEDNESDAY - only a few days away. If you're interested, pre-register online then call or stop by the range during our normal hours or during Tuesday Tactical Training League to lock in your spot.

Handgun 1 - Wed, Jan 18, 6-10pm
Handgun 2 - Sat, Jan 28, 6-10pm (after the added CCW class)
Handgun 3 - Sat, Feb 11, 4-8pm
Handgun 4 - Sat, Feb 25, 4-8pm
Handgun 5 - Sat, Mar 10, 6-10pm (after the CCW class)

Range hours:

Mon, 5-9PM
Tue, 10a-2p, 5:30-8:30p
Wed, 5-6p - after that, too late for Handgun 1, which is a prerequisite for all the remaining classes!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The last message generated a few questions. The range will open at 9:00 AM on Friday for our Black Friday event. Join us on the air from 6:00-8:00 AM while you're out hitting Early Bird and Doorbuster sales around the area or just having breakfast, then head on over to SimTrainer for some ballistic therapy! Yes, the range will be open all day - 9 AM-9PM.

Fall Rifle and Shotgun Classes Added

The long-awaited fall classes for rifle and shotgun have now been added to the web
site and are available for registration at the range!

Currently open for registration:
Basic Tactical Rifle - 8 hours over two days, Oct 15 and Oct 16, 1-5 PM each day.
Intermediate Tactical Rifle - 4 hours, Oct 30, 1-5 PM.
Basic Shotgun - 4 hours, Oct 27, 5:30-9:30 PM.

PMC Ammo by the Case

The range got in some cases of PMC ammo. The largest quantity is in 9MM, but there is at least one case of each of these.

Each case is 20 boxes (1000 rds), standard (not toxic-metal free) FMJ ammo.

As you may have noticed, ammo is starting to get harder to find again. Still nothing like the shortages in 2008-2009, but we are getting word that prices will be going up and more at this price may not be available. However, we'll get as much as we can when this runs out.

Home Security

Many of the members and others affiliated with SimTrainer recognize that safety is something each of us are responsible for, not something we can take for granted or depend on someone else to provide for us. After all, it's why we came to SimTrainer in the first place. On the other hand, we are quite skeptical of any marketing campaign that uses too many superlatives, promises too much, or has a 'Get it NOW because this is a LIMITED TIME OFFER!!!!' close.

So, do we send you an offer for information about getting prepared for whatever might come down the road when there's the risk that the marketing approach might turn some people off? In this case, we decided to provide you the link and let you make up your own mind. It will take a few steps to get to the presentation, including clicking on a link in a confirmation email.

The introduction is called "Simple Steps for Ultra-Effective Home Security."

Really? Not just "effective", but "ultra-effective?" Okay, whatever. However, after watching it (not really a video - more of an animated slide show with voice over narration), it has some good, basic information on securing your home. There is a link under the presentation to download a checklist of simple steps that can improve your home security.

The information is offered by DeltaMedia, the same group that publishes the Concealed Carry Magazine from USCCA. They are launching a new subscription web site called You Are Prepared. It's not inexpensive, but then neither is being unprepared.

As we promise to all our email list subscribers, your address will not be shared with or sold to anyone, and you can get off our list at any time. This offer makes the same promise. There is an unsubscribe link in the confirmation email, so if you try it and don't want any more info, you can get off the list.

PS: Yes, this is the same program you may have received in an email from Buckeye Firearms Association this morning as soon as the official program launched. The full campaign includes daily emails, so if you got their first one, you'll probably get several more. This will be the last one you get from us - take it or leave it, your choice. As it should be.

PPS: We have been assured that this program will NOT be promoted with some of the same alarmist approach that initially characterized the Self-Defense SHIELD promotion - many of you complained about that program. We agree that was tainted by how it was marketed, which is unfortunate because it's an excellent program. We also intend to monitor the launch of this program and make sure the emphasis is on the usefulness of the product. SimTrainer is also exploring the possibility of inviting subject matter experts to provide periodic seminars to our membership to reinforce and expand on the concepts this program addresses - being prepared in advance for when bad things happen, whatever the cause. More to come on those later...

National Training Week Events

Quick update for anyone who missed Saturday's Shootin' from the Hip show. National Training Week, started a few years ago to raise awareness of firearms training, begins this year on Independence Day, Monday, July 4. We will have special hours at the range this week. On Independence Day, we open with a special Monday Morning edition of Shootin' from the Hip starting at 8:00 AM. The range will be open from 10 AM - 2 PM as well, but will be closed for the evening. The rest of the week will be regular hours, plus we will be open Thursday evening from 5-9 PM.

During the extra hours on Monday and Thursday, we will be offering a $25 special deal - includes the first year of an Associate membership (normally $75), legal summary of the changes to Ohio firearms and concealed carry law that Governor Kasich signed last Thursday, and range time with instruction (normally $50 per hour). Spread the word! This is a great way to find out more about SimTrainer, get started with a discounted one-year Associate membership, and spend a little time on Independence Day exercising the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment!
