Civilian Training

SimTrainer is offering the following courses. Please call or e-mail us for registration information or click here to request registration. Additional courses will be scheduled on a monthly basis as needed.

If you have never handled firearms before, or you would like to introduce someone to the shooting sports for the first time in a safe, casual, friendly, and non-threatening environment, check out our award-winning class called First Shots!!

Class Format
All SimTrainer classes are conducted in a casual, relaxed environment. Casual and comfortable clothing is both acceptable and highly recommended, especially for the advanced handgun and TPD classes. We have some refreshments available at the range, but you are also welcomed and encouraged to bring food and drink for yourself or to share with others in the class. This is especially true for longer classes and classes that cross a normal meal hour. Although we do normally have a half hour break at lunch or dinner, many people prefer to bring food with them rather than go out. If you have any special requests you would like us to support, please let us know when you register online in the comment section, with an email on the contact form, or by calling ahead. We may not be able to accommodate every request, but we'll give it a shot.

Private Lessons
In addition to excellent classes, SimTrainer has NRA- and OPOTA-Certified instructors who can teach private lessons to correct shooting problems and resolve any issues. Lessons are only $50 per hour, scheduled by appointment.

Concealed Carry Class
8 hrs. / $100.00
This state-mandated course is taught by NRA and OPOTA certified instructors, and it meets the State of Ohio training requirements for applying for a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) which permits licensees to carry concealed firearms. It includes instruction in range safety, safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition, live fire shooting proficiency/qualification from distances of 7, 10, 15 and 25 feet, and completion of a written test consisting of a combination of true/false, multiple choice, short answer and fill in questions. Students will also be given a copy of the Attorney General’s Ohio Concealed Carry Law book which can also be downloaded for the Ohio Attorney General’s website. (This book will also be provided during class, so there is no need to print it.) We strongly recommend that students review this publication before attending class so they can more actively participate in class discussions concerning related legal issues and get answers to frequently asked questions. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion of training which must be presented to your local sheriff’s office along with the required CHL application. - Standard License Application

Please note that this course is not primarily a firearms course. Although the State of Ohio recently lowered the minimum hours of training needed to obtain a CHL from 12 to 8 hours, SimTrainer will continue to offer opportunities for persons with varying degrees of firearms experience to obtain the level of training they deem appropriate to achieve confidence and competence in owning, carrying and potentially using a firearm in self-defense. If you have little or no experience with firearms, we strongly recommend that you first complete the Basic Handgun Safety and Familiarization course (below) or arrange a Private Lesson before attending the Concealed Carry course. Attendance at the Basic Handgun class or taking a Private Lesson will provide students with structured basic instruction in firearms safety, handling, and shooting proficiency and afford them the opportunity to try several of the most popular firearms before making a purchase. Basic Handgun courses are offered twice a month on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, and Private Lessons can be arranged at various dates/times throughout the week. The Basic Handgun course normally costs $100 if taken by itself, but those who register for it in conjunction with enrollment in the Concealed Carry course will get a $50 discount.

If you are competent in the safe handling and proficient shooting of handguns but you have not yet purchased your own, we have several popular models (Glock 17, 19, 26 or 42, S&W M&P and Shield, Springfield XD, XDM or XDs, Ruger LC9s, SR9, LC380 or LCR, and Sig Sauer P320, among others) available for a $10 rental fee on our Range Gun program. Please discuss your firearms background with one of our staff members so they can assist you in selecting the gun that is right for you.

If you are interested in receiving a more thorough understanding of the legal issues surrounding concealed carry, we are offering an optional 4-hour Legal Update course, listed below, taught by a Municipal Court Judge. This very informative session will provide you with a better understanding of critical issues like self-defense, deadly force and the Castle Doctrine in addition to a detailed overview of when and where you can and cannot carry a concealed handgun. This course is offered following completion of the required eight hour course. Your investment for the Legal Update is $50.

PLEASE NOTE: Ohio requires that handguns be transported unloaded unless you already have a CHL and are carrying pursuant to that license. The definition of unloaded also requires having no loaded magazines or speed loaders in a vehicle if a gun they can be used with is also in the vehicle unless the firearm and magazines are separated by closures. We still strongly recommend that you do not preload your magazines or speed loaders before coming to the range!

Students will need 100 rounds of ammunition for the live fire range portion of the course. Ammo in 9mm, .38SPL, .40S&W, .45ACP and .380ACP calibers is available for purchase at the range.

Concealed Carry Legal Update
4 hrs. / $50.00
The passage of several laws has resulted in numerous revisions to the original 2004 Concealed Carry provisions and other firearms-related law. It is important for those who own and carry a firearm to be familiar with related legal issues. SimTrainer recognizes the need for licensees to keep up to date on related legal issues, so we offer this additional Legal Update training taught by a sitting Municipal Court Judge. This course is open to anyone, including military members who received their license based on prior firearms training and those who already possess a CHL from Ohio or another state. It is intended for anyone who wants to receive current information on Ohio firearms and concealed carry law. To best prepare for this class and have your questions ready, we recommend that you download and read the current
Ohio's Concealed Carry Law booklet from the Ohio Attorney General's web site. Classes will be offered as follows:

* CleanFire ammo is required for the league and all live-fire classes held downrange to reduce airborne contamination from lead-based primers. Because we stand downrange during the leagues and some classes, the airborne lead compounds are not pulled out of the range as completely as they are when shooting from the booths during normal operations. This is a serious health risk for shooters, instructors, and range officers. Ammunition purchased for these classes at the range will meet this requirement. If you bring your own ammunition, ensure it has lead-free primers and powders with FMJ or TMJ bullets. Examples of suitable ammunition are Speer CleanFire (CF in the product name), PMC eRange, and Winchester "WinClean" ammo with FMJ or TMJ bullets.
