Civilian Training
SimTrainer is offering the following courses. Please call or e-mail us for registration information
or click here to request
registration. Additional courses will be scheduled on a monthly basis as needed.
If you have never handled firearms before, or you would like
to introduce someone to the shooting sports for the first
time in a safe, casual, friendly, and non-threatening
environment, check out our award-winning class called
First Shots!!
Class Format
All SimTrainer classes are conducted in a
casual, relaxed environment.
Casual and comfortable clothing is both acceptable and
highly recommended, especially for the advanced handgun and
TPD classes. We have some refreshments available at the
range, but you are also welcomed and encouraged to bring
food and drink for yourself or to share with others in the
class. This is especially true for longer classes and
classes that cross a normal meal hour. Although we do
normally have a half hour break at lunch or dinner, many
people prefer to bring food with them rather than go out. If
you have any special requests you would like us to support,
please let us know when you register online in the comment
section, with an email on the contact form, or by calling
ahead. We may not be able to accommodate every request, but
we'll give it a shot.
Private Lessons
In addition to excellent classes, SimTrainer has NRA- and OPOTA-Certified
instructors who can teach private lessons to correct
shooting problems and resolve any issues. Lessons are only
$50 per hour, scheduled by appointment.

Carrying Concealed Weapons (CCW)
15 hrs. / $150
This state-mandated course exceeds the requirements for obtaining a
Concealed Handgun License (CHL).
The emphasis is on the legal, ethical, and moral
implications of carrying and potentially using a firearm for self defense.
This course includes instruction
in weapons handling and safety, range safety, and safe storage of firearms; ammunition handling, use and storage;
weapon functioning and operation, legal aspects of firearms possession and use;
concealed carry options; firing
proficiency/qualification and related required topics.
In order to earn certification, participants must pass a
written test consisting of a combination of multiple choice,
true/false, and fill in questions and complete a structured
qualification course of fire from distances of 7, 10, 15 and
25 feet.
The legal portion of this class is taught by an active city
prosecuting attorney (evening and weekend classes only). This is one aspect of the SimTrainer
course that makes it stand above most others in the area.
Most other classes will give you a copy of the Attorney
General's CCW handbook and tell you to call your attorney
regarding detailed questions. At SimTrainer, you can ask
those questions of our attorney! To best prepare for this
class and have your questions ready, we recommend that you
download and read the
Ohio's Concealed Carry Law booklet
from the Ohio Attorney General's web site. Also on that site - New License Application, License Renewal Application.
Please note that this course is not primarily a firearms
course. The state requirements are all carefully addressed,
but students are expected to already be familiar with
handling firearms safely and accurately. If you have not had formal handgun
instruction before or
it has been a long time since you have shot in a structured
environment, we strongly recommend that you first
complete the Basic Handgun Safety and Familiarization course
(below) or arrange for a private lesson before attending the CCW course.
You will need a firearm and holster for the shooting portion of the class.
Ammunition is available at the range in .380 Auto, 9MM, .38 Special,
.40 S&W, and .45 ACP. If your gun requires ammunition we do
not carry or if you will be bringing your own
ammunition, please have 150 rounds of CleanFire*
full metal jacket
ammunition
for qualification. If you do not have your own firearm in a
suitable personal defense caliber (.380 Auto or larger), we have several models
available at the range you may rent for class.
PLEASE NOTE: Ohio
requires that handguns be transported unloaded unless you
already have a CHL and are carrying pursuant to that
license. The definition of unloaded also requires having no
loaded magazines or speed loaders for in a vehicle if a gun
they can be used with is also in the vehicle.
Do not preload your magazines and
speed loaders before coming to the range!

CCW Legal Update
4 hrs. / $49
The passage of SB 184, which went into effect September 9, 2008, resulted in some major revisions to the original
law concerning how permit holders can carry their firearms. It is important to know and understand
these changes, so SimTrainer is taking the lead in providing update training on this critical topic.
This
session is open only to those who already have a CHL
and desire much needed legal training on the
related criminal and civil legal issues.
To best prepare for this class and have your questions
ready, we recommend that you download and read the
Ohio's Concealed Carry Law booklet
from the Ohio Attorney General's web site.
Update training will be offered as follows:

Total Personal Defense Level I
3 hours / $59
This is the first of four levels of training
designed to integrate empty hands defensive tactics with
firearms proficiency into a total personal defense system.
This integrated course emphasizes danger awareness and
avoidance as the preferred course of action. However, due to
the realities of the world in which we live, emphasis will
then shift to the dynamics of a violent confrontation with
the goal of empowering students to win such encounters when
they cannot be avoided. Students will receive training in
easy to learn and retain self defense tactics including
punches and kicks. These techniques will be practiced until
mastered using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. No live ammunition will be used in
this course. We need a
minimum of eight students to conduct this course.
2011
Total Personal Defense
Level II
3 hours / $59
This course is for students who have completed Level
I. Following a review and practice of techniques learned in
Level 1, training will begin with a discussion of verbal
de-escalation techniques and progress to intermediate
tactics including, escapes, weapon retention, and keychain/kubaton
options.
No live ammunition will be used in this course.

Total Personal Defense
Level III
3 hours / $79
Following a review and practice of techniques
learned in Levels 1 and 2, instruction will include advanced
techniques involving ground fighting and force option
decision making including firearms. Students will
participate in a series of safe, realistic and controlled
simulation exercises designed to provide them with
opportunities to see how they will respond in real world
situations. No live ammunition will be used in
this course. We need a
minimum of eight students to conduct this course.
2011
Total Personal Defense
Level IV
3 hours / $79
Following a review and practice of techniques
learned in previous Levels 1-3, students will participate in
a series of dynamic, safe, realistic and controlled
scenarios designed to challenge them to apply learned
techniques in rapidly evolving, stressful conditions.
Students will be required to bring the scenarios through to
logical conclusions using techniques learned throughout the
series of previous courses. This level of training is seldom
offered to civilians, but it is essential to preparing them
for real world encounters. Scenarios will be
videotaped and critiqued, and copies will be made available
to participating students.
No live ammunition will be used in this course.
We need a minimum of eight students
to conduct this course.
2011
Simfire Shootout
4
hours / $79
This course is designed to give students the
opportunity to see how they will physiologically,
psychologically and emotionally respond to real world
violent encounters. Following a review of several videos of
actual violent encounters, students will be exposed to a
series of increasingly complex exercises/scenarios designed
to give them the opportunity to experience the effects of
stress on their performance. These scenarios will be
conducted using airsoft
and/or paintball ammunition. Students will be introduced to the
ever-popular Hogan’s Hall exercise whereby they will be
required to make split-second shoot-don’t shoot decisions. No live ammunition will be used. SimTrainer will provide all equipment needed for this
course.
We need a minimum of eight students to

2011
- Oct 27 -- 5:30PM-9:30PM Thu (SimTrainer Classroom and Range)
* CleanFire ammo is required for the league and
all live-fire classes to reduce airborne contamination from
lead-based primers. Because we stand downrange during the
leagues and some classes, the airborne lead compounds are
not pulled out of the range as completely as they are when
shooting from the booths during normal operations. This is a
serious health risk for shooters, instructors, and range
officers. Ammunition purchased at the range will meet this
requirement. If you bring your own ammunition, ensure it has
lead-free primers and powders with FMJ or TMJ bullets. Examples of suitable
ammunition are Speer CleanFire (CF in the product name) and
Winchester "WinClean" ammo with FMJ or TMJ bullets.
