Civilian Training

SimTrainer is offering the following courses. Please call or e-mail us for registration information or click here to request registration. Additional courses will be scheduled on a monthly basis as needed.

Class Format
All SimTrainer classes are conducted in a casual, relaxed environment. Casual and comfortable clothing is both acceptable and highly recommended, especially for the advanced handgun and TPD classes. We have some refreshments available at the range, but you are also welcomed and encouraged to bring food and drink for yourself or to share with others in the class. This is especially true for longer classes and classes that cross a normal meal hour. Although we do normally have a half hour break at lunch or dinner, many people prefer to bring food with them rather than go out. If you have any special requests you would like us to support, please let us know when you register online in the comment section, with an email on the contact form, or by calling ahead. We may not be able to accommodate every request, but we'll give it a shot.

Private Lessons
In addition to excellent classes, SimTrainer has NRA- and OPOTA-Certified instructors who can teach private lessons to correct shooting problems and resolve any issues. Lessons are only $50 per hour, scheduled by appointment.

Carrying Concealed Weapons (CCW)
15 hrs. / $150
Web Special - Register online or tell us you found this course online and get a $25 discount!
This state-mandated course exceeds the requirements for obtaining a Concealed Handgun License (CHL). The emphasis is on the legal, ethical, and moral implications of carrying deadly force for self defense. This course includes instruction in weapons handling and safety, range safety, and safe storage of firearms; ammunition handling, use and storage; weapon functioning and operation, legal aspects of firearms possession and use; concealed carry options; firing proficiency/qualification and related required topics. Participants will have to pass both a written test and practical qualification course to earn certification.

The legal portion of this class is taught by an active city prosecuting attorney. This is one aspect of the SimTrainer course that makes it stand above most others in the area. Most other classes will give you a copy of the Attorney General's CCW handbook and tell you to call your attorney regarding detailed questions. At SimTrainer, you can ask those questions of our attorney!

Please note that this course is not primarily a firearms course. The state requirements are all carefully addressed, but students are expected to already be familiar with handling firearms safely. If you have not had formal handgun instruction before or it has been a long time since you have shot in a structured environment, we strongly recommend that you first complete the Basic Handgun Safety and Familiarization course (below) or arrange for a private lesson before attending the CCW course.

The first day of each session, both weekday and weekend schedules, are classroom only. Please do not bring your firearms to class on the first day. You will be given additional information in class regarding the equipment needed for the shooting portion of the class, usually on the second day. If you will be bringing your own ammunition, please have 150 rounds of CleanFire* ammunition on the day of qualification.

  • Nov 15-16  --  9:00AM-5:00PM
  • Dec 8-11  --  5:30PM-9:30PM

CCW Legal Update
4 hrs. / $49
The passage of SB 184, which went into effect September 9, 2008, resulted in some major revisions to the original law concerning how permit holders can carry their firearms. It is important to know and understand these changes, so SimTrainer is taking the lead in providing update training on this critical topic.
This session is open only to those who already have a CHL and desire much needed legal training on the related criminal and civil legal issues. Update training will be offered as follows:

  • Saturday Nov 15  --  1:00-5:00PM
  • Wednesday Dec 10  --  5:30-9:30PM

Additional Course Offerings Include:

However, due to the realities of the world in which we live, emphasis will then shift to the dynamics of a violent confrontation with the goal of empowering students to win such encounters when they cannot be avoided. Students will receive training in easy to learn and retain self defense tactics including punches and kicks. These techniques will be practiced until mastered using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. No live ammunition will be used in this course. This level of training is seldom offered to civilians, but it is essential to preparing them for real world encounters. Scenarios will be videotaped and critiqued, and copies will be made available to participating students. No live ammunition will be used in this course. * CleanFire ammo is now required for the league and all live-fire classes to reduce airborne contamination from lead-based primers. Because we stand downrange during the leagues and some classes, the airborne lead compounds are not pulled out of the range as completely as they are when shooting from the booths during normal operations. This is a serious health risk for shooters, instructors, and range officers. Ammunition purchased at the range will meet this requirement. If you bring your own ammunition, ensure it has lead-free primers and powders with FMJ or TMJ bullets. Examples of suitable ammunition are Speer CleanFire (CF in the product name) and Winchester "WinClean" ammo with FMJ or TMJ bullets.
