Show Date: 5/28/2011 - Listen Here Topics - Cleveland penalized for legal abuse of gun owners with attorney's fees awarded to the Buckeye Firearms Foundation who sued the city. Preliminary 2010 crime statistics released by the FBI. In general, violent crime is down, but society is by no means safe, especially for the more vulnerable members. Throughout this time, gun ownership has greatly increased - although the decrease in crime cannot be directly attributed to the increase in gun ownership, it is very clear that more guns does NOT mean more violent crime as groups like the Brady Campaign, Violence Policy Center, and the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence would have you believe. Passing along the firearms heritage - applies to sons and daughters! SimTrainer is glad to help by providing the initial training to ensure getting started on a solid foundation. Application of deadly force - are the Hollywood representations or email rumors correct? It is very important to shut out the distractions and deal with the facts. The critical factors for the use of deadly force - you did not start the confrontation, you had a reasonable and honest belief that you were at imminent risk of grave bodiy harm (which includes rape) or death, and you had fulfilled any duty to retreat. Self defense is based on your view of the situation at the time, given the very few seconds you have to make the life-or-death decision. Physical handicaps do not in any way create a firearms disabilty, and there is no need to register a firearm in Ohio or have permit. Legal firearm carry is permitted on bike paths. National reciprocity bill now has 227 cosponsors! Contact your US Representatives to encourage progress on this bill. Selecting a rifle, cost and availability of ammunition are factors to consider. Indiana Supreme Court decision generally stating that citizens do not have a right to resist entry by law enforcement, even unlawful entry - there is much more to the story than that simplistic summary. Comments on the "guns in bars" bill, more accurately described as Restaurant Carry - we strongly support this bill and encourage restaurants to not ban carry in their establishments. Selecting a firearm - 9MM or .45 ACP? Both are excellent options with advantages and disadvantages - what is best for you is based on personal preference. Illinois Supreme Court decision overturning a conviction for the equivalent of 'Existence While Armed' for non-resident with a license to carry a concealed handgun in his home state. Campus carry opening up in other states, needs to open in Ohio as well. Critically review your carry equipment to ensure it all still works as designed and is not worn. Dry fire - great way to practice, but must be done safely. NRA Annual Meeting - April 29-May 1 in Pittsburg. Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association - ORPA.net for the Ohio NRA affiliate organization. Age and ways to start teaching firearms safety and skills to children. Business having No Weapons signs can permit carry - should the sign be left up to limit carry? We recommend removing the signs - criminals will ignore it and you don't have to be concerned about law-abiding CHL holders! Links: Show Date: 4/2/2011 - Listen Here Topics - Getting a license to carry a concealed handgun in Ohio - take a class (includes live fire certification), fill out the application, provide fingerprints and a photo, and pay the fees . If you meet all the qualifications, the sheriff will issue the license within 45 days, usually less. Adding a pistol grip to a shotgun no longer restricted. Restaurant Carry/Car Carry reform bill (HB45) making progress, next step is a vote by the full House followed by consideration by the Senate. "Obamacare" bill does not contain any gun control issues as far as anyone has yet identified. Walther PK380 - point-and-shoot gun for self-defense, but is somewhat complicated to operate for a new shooter because it required decocking but has no decocker. Single action (trigger pull only fires the gun) vs. double action (trigger cocks the hammer and fires the gun) - some double action guns can be cocked to single action mode or fired in double action mode from the hammer down. Some double action revolvers cannot be cocked to single action mode, either because the hammer is hidden inside the frame or the spur was "bobbed" - cut off to minimize the possibility of getting snagged on clothing when drawing from concealment. Shotguns for hunting deer and birds, smooth vs. rifled barrels, and semi-auto vs. pump action. "No Weapons" signs by a parking lot puts the buildings off limits, but does not make leaving your gun in the car a criminal offense. No laws in Ohio make ammunition such as Glazer Safety Slugs illegal. No "good Samaritan" law for handgun defense - although one may or may not be charged criminally if an act of self-defense results in injury to a by-stander, there is no such protection against civil liability. "Pocket" guns - several good options now available for carrying a gun in a pocket, but should always be in a holster with nothing else in the pocket. National Instant Check System (NICS) denials may be appealed to find out what caused the denial, check with local law enforcement to ensure nothing is pending. No limit in Ohio law on the number of handguns that may be carried. Selecting a handgun for concealed carry. Status on Restaurant Carry/Car Carry Reform bill - not yet voted on in the full House, but has been reported out of committee. Storing ammunition. Show Date: 3/19/2011 - Listen Here We're Back!! Topics - Restaurant Carry/Car Carry bills have now been introduced. The House version has been reported out of committee and to the floor. This would eliminate the need to leave a firearm unattended when going to a restaurant that serves alcohol. There has also been a bill introduced in the US House of Representatives that would eliminate the need for multiple licenses to carry in any state that issues a license. As currently written, it would allow carry on a license issued by any state in any state that issues licenses. It does not preempt any provision of state law with respect to issuing licenses, but would force states to recognize licenses issued by other states. It would not require may issue states to recognize non-resident licenses from other states held by state residents. The state would need to be one that issues a license - the current version does not address the three states which do not require licenses (Vermont, Alaska, and Arizona). Suggestion for base policy allowing firearms on base, using technique that would mirror the procedures required for college campuses - can be worn when in the vehicle, but must be locked in the vehicle. The Mayors Against Illegal Guns have released a telephone survey supposedly proving that people want more gun control. Huge surprise - right in line with their agenda. Gun control laws, or any other laws, will not stop a criminal intent on doing harm, particularly in the case where self preservation is not a factor. It was several minutes before the police could get there and take over for the citizens who stopped the shooter and held him in custody. Statements by the youngest victim's father stating how this tragedy must not be used to restrict personal liberty. Proposal to restrict possession of firearms within 1000 feet of an elected official, even if possible, would not stop a criminal with evil intent. Note that the facts are not yet in (reports of Rep Giffords' death captured in this show have since proven incorrect). Although many will try to get ahead of the investigations and file reports, it is far better to wait until all the facts are in before making conclusions. When some group decides to take the issue and use it for their ends, be very skeptical...ask probing questions, and do not be satisfied with pat answers. Note that current Ohio laws prohibiting carry in a variety of sensitive places only serve to protect criminals, not the law abiding citizens who must enter those places only after being disarmed. It's difficult to say you're not going to speak to the police, but instead say something to the effect of, "I would like to cooperate, I don't believe I have done anything wrong, but I do have a right to speak with a lawyer and I want to exercise that right." Why would anyone be "shooting from the hip" - is it ever appropriate?Absolutely - it's an advanced skill, one of several handgun techniques variously called instinctive shooting, point shooting, or target-focused shooting, among others. We teach this technique at SimTrainer in our Advanced Handgun Level 5 class - Spontaneous Assault. Done properly, it is remarkably effective out to about 15 feet. However, as with all advanced skills, doing it safely requires proper training and practice. We strongly recommend that people not try this technique for the first time without the supervision of a qualified, experienced instructor.
