Finding an attorney to defend you in the aftermath of a violent encounter. Carrying in other states - rules for concealed carry varies widely and are set by each state. It is very important for anyone who wants to carry through reciprocity or in states that recognize the Ohio license to research the rules in each state they will be traveling through.

Topics - Cleveland penalized for legal abuse of gun owners with attorney's fees awarded to the Buckeye Firearms Foundation who sued the city. Preliminary 2010 crime statistics released by the FBI. In general, violent crime is down, but society is by no means safe, especially for the more vulnerable members. Throughout this time, gun ownership has greatly increased - although the decrease in crime cannot be directly attributed to the increase in gun ownership, it is very clear that more guns does NOT mean more violent crime as groups like the Brady Campaign, Violence Policy Center, and the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence would have you believe. Passing along the firearms heritage - applies to sons and daughters! SimTrainer is glad to help by providing the initial training to ensure getting started on a solid foundation. Application of deadly force - are the Hollywood representations or email rumors correct? It is very important to shut out the distractions and deal with the facts. The critical factors for the use of deadly force - you did not start the confrontation, you had a reasonable and honest belief that you were at imminent risk of grave bodiy harm (which includes rape) or death, and you had fulfilled any duty to retreat. Self defense is based on your view of the situation at the time, given the very few seconds you have to make the life-or-death decision. Physical handicaps do not in any way create a firearms disabilty, and there is no need to register a firearm in Ohio or have permit. Legal firearm carry is permitted on bike paths.

Always get the facts before making conclusions. Transporting an unloaded firearm in a motor vehicle. Comments on the "guns in bars" bill, more accurately described as Restaurant Carry - we strongly support this bill and encourage restaurants to not ban carry in their establishments. Selecting a firearm - 9MM or .45 ACP? Both are excellent options with advantages and disadvantages - what is best for you is based on personal preference. The key point is not caliber but the ability to place an accurate shot under stress.

Show Date: 4/2/2011 - Listen Here
Topics - Getting a license to carry a concealed handgun in Ohio - take a class (includes live fire certification), fill out the application, provide fingerprints and a photo, and pay the fees . If you meet all the qualifications, the sheriff will issue the license within 45 days, usually less. Adding a pistol grip to a shotgun no longer restricted. Restaurant Carry/Car Carry reform bill (HB45) making progress, next step is a vote by the full House followed by consideration by the Senate. "Obamacare" bill does not contain any gun control issues as far as anyone has yet identified. Walther PK380 - point-and-shoot gun for self-defense, but is somewhat complicated to operate for a new shooter because it required decocking but has no decocker. Single action (trigger pull only fires the gun) vs. double action (trigger cocks the hammer and fires the gun) - some double action guns can be cocked to single action mode or fired in double action mode from the hammer down. Some double action revolvers cannot be cocked to single action mode, either because the hammer is hidden inside the frame or the spur was "bobbed" - cut off to minimize the possibility of getting snagged on clothing when drawing from concealment. Shotguns for hunting deer and birds, smooth vs. rifled barrels, and semi-auto vs. pump action. "No Weapons" signs by a parking lot puts the buildings off limits, but does not make leaving your gun in the car a criminal offense. No laws in Ohio make ammunition such as Glazer Safety Slugs illegal. No "good Samaritan" law for handgun defense - although one may or may not be charged criminally if an act of self-defense results in injury to a by-stander, there is no such protection against civil liability.

No limit in Ohio law on the number of handguns that may be carried. Selecting a handgun for concealed carry. Status on Restaurant Carry/Car Carry Reform bill - not yet voted on in the full House, but has been reported out of committee. Storing ammunition.
Show Date: 3/19/2011 - Listen Here We're Back!!
Topics - Restaurant Carry/Car Carry bills have now been introduced. The House version has been reported out of committee and to the floor. This would eliminate the need to leave a firearm unattended when going to a restaurant that serves alcohol. There has also been a bill introduced in the US House of Representatives that would eliminate the need for multiple licenses to carry in any state that issues a license. As currently written, it would allow carry on a license issued by any state in any state that issues licenses. It does not preempt any provision of state law with respect to issuing licenses, but would force states to recognize licenses issued by other states. It would not require may issue states to recognize non-resident licenses from other states held by state residents. The state would need to be one that issues a license - the current version does not address the three states which do not require licenses (Vermont, Alaska, and Arizona). Suggestion for base policy allowing firearms on base, using technique that would mirror the procedures required for college campuses - can be worn when in the vehicle, but must be locked in the vehicle. NRA Annual Meeting in Pittsburg - is concealed carry permitted? More to come... Parking lot carry - not yet introduced, but could be coming soon.
Show Date: 1/22/2011 - Listen Here
Topics - Preliminary reports from SHOT Show starting to come out - stand by for more news soon! Continuing discussion regarding the 1/8/2011 shooting in Tucson, AZ. The Mayors Against Illegal Guns have released a telephone survey supposedly proving that people want more gun control. Huge surprise - right in line with their agenda. Complete garbage, but right in line with their agenda. Gun control laws, or any other laws, will not stop a criminal intent on doing harm, particularly in the case where self preservation is not a factor. Jeff answers questions on suitability of particular handguns for concealed carry, practicality and utility of lasers on handguns.

Topics - Discussion regarding last week's shooting in Tucson, AZ. Sadly, the anti-gun crowd lived up to their reputations. Note that it was three civilians, one of whom carried but did not use a concealed handgun, in subduing the shooter. It was several minutes before the police could get there and take over for the citizens who stopped the shooter and held him in custody. Statements by the youngest victim's father stating how this tragedy must not be used to restrict personal liberty. Proposal to restrict possession of firearms within 1000 feet of an elected official, even if possible, would not stop a criminal with evil intent. Nobody argues for limiting any other enumerated rights.
Show Date: 1/8/2011 - Listen Here
Topics - Show dedicated to the memory of Clark County Sheriff Deputy Suzanne Hopper. Reflections on her life and the memorial service. Breaking news of shooting in Tucson, AZ, targeting Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Note that the facts are not yet in (reports of Rep Giffords' death captured in this show have since proven incorrect). Although many will try to get ahead of the investigations and file reports, it is far better to wait until all the facts are in before making conclusions. When some group decides to take the issue and use it for their ends, be very skeptical...ask probing questions, and do not be satisfied with pat answers. Note that current Ohio laws prohibiting carry in a variety of sensitive places only serve to protect criminals, not the law abiding citizens who must enter those places only after being disarmed.

Topics - Shooting at a Panama City Florida school board meeting. Note that most of the speculation in the media reports are not confirmed. As expected, the anti-gun crowd is trying to spin this as a reason to ban guns. In fact, it is a perfect example why board members should not have been required to be disarmed. Not yet known where this convicted criminal obtained the firearm, but his mere possession was a violation of existing law. New sponsor to the show - Olde English Outfitters! Introducing people to the shooting sports, with proper training.

Topics - Unwinding the Brady Campaign and Mayors Against Illegal Guns spin on firearms found in Mexico. Unfortunately, the anti-gun forces routinely misrepresent statistics to make their case. Strict gun laws - maybe they are needed in some places - except that the highest violent crime rates in the country are in the places with the most severe gun restrictions. They don't work. Training for concealed carry - non-resident licenses from other states instead of the resident Ohio license - not recommended; get the Ohio license in addition to any other non-resident licenses needed to allow carry in other states. Ohio CCW training must include life fire, but the minimum required by Ohio law is not sufficient to prepare citizens to be proficient under the stress of a violent encounter. Every responsible citizen should get advanced training and practice in realistic scenarios. Reciprocity with other states.

Topics - Special guest - Ohio State Representative Jerrod Martin. Concealed carry legislation and the lame duck session of the Ohio Legislature. There almost no chance any of the pending bills will even get addressed, much less passed. Focus now should shift to the next session which will include a new and strongly pro-gun Speaker of the House. When reintroduced, bills similar to the current pending legislation for restaurant and car carry reform will almost certainly pass quickly, putting these provisions into effect as early as Summer 2011. Topics - Classes and league at SimTrainer. Discussion regarding enactment of AZ immigration bill and the injunction against its enforcement, inconsistency by not addressing sanctuary cities where local governments have prohibited enforcement of immigration laws. Responsibility of citizenship - contact elected officials, and especially pay attention to candidates and their positions. Elections have consequences; vote wisely! Laws regarding having firearms in the home, in a vehicle, or in a hotel in Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee; Castle doctrine and conditions for use of deadly force in defense. Health care bill and rumored taxes on ammunition - concerns are understandable but no such provisions have yet been found. Handgun shoots fine from the bench but shoots low when held - normally a result of anticipating recoil and jerking the trigger; this is a very common shooting error and relatively easy for a qualified instructor to diagnose and correct. Caliber - not as important as shot placement as long as momentum is sufficient to penetrate 12-14 inches. Selecting a handgun for defense - best for shooters to select their own after trial rather than to buy a gun for someone else. Small guns often difficult and painful to shoot, particularly for smaller shooters.

Riding in a vehicle (not a driver) stopped for an official law enforcement purpose should still provide required notice, as appropriately as practical. Finding parts for older firearms can be a challenge. Cutting down a firearm can cause problems with Federal firearms laws.

Political statements by Mexican President Felipe Calderón calling for a US "assault weapons ban" reinstatement - replete with blatantly false statements. No impact on crime, either in US or Mexico. Guns are not the problem, never have been, and never will be - criminals cause crime, not guns, not the economy, not jobs, not anything else. Supposed UN treaty on small arms - not even drafted yet, much less signed, and would not be ratified by this Senate regardless of whether the Clinton State Department would agree to UN terms. Holster clothing - pants, vests, T-shirts - try them out if possible before committing to purchase. Shield law to prevent civil liability following use of handgun for self-defense. Senate Bill 239 - Restaurant Carry bill passed the Senate, comments by Ohio FOP's Mark Drum quoted in Columbus Dispatch.

Getting restaurant carry passed - contact state legislators if not already co-sponsors.
Show Date: 3/20/2010 - Listen Here!
Topics - Ohio Senate now considering SB239 which would make concealed carry legal in restaurants which serve alcohol. The bill would also remove restrictions on method of carry in vehicles for people with an Ohio CHL or a license from other states recognized by Ohio. This would allow pocket carry, vehicle-mounted holsters which are not in a console or glove box, waistband clips, and other methods not currently allowed. "No Weapons" sign on local bank fails to prevent armed robbery...again. Gun registration not required in Ohio, the difference between registration and the NICS check. Limitations on private sales - you can only sell or purchase a handgun in a private sale with someone who is a resident of the same state as you. Check the driver license for the seller or buyer to ensure you are both residents of the same state, particularly if you purchase at a gun show. Gun laws in other states available from several sources. Renewing the Ohio CHL - start soon enough before your current license expires to complete renewal, but the new license will expire five years after the new one is issued - renewing earlier than 45 days will shorten your license duration more than necessary. A gun carried visibly in a holster is not considered concealed carry simply because the holster hides part of the gun. After taking a certified Ohio concealed carry class, you must obtain your first license within 3 years or you will need to take another class to apply for a license.

Transport of an unloaded firearm can be in a closed box or case which is in plain sight or in a compartment which cannot be reached without leaving the vehicle. Registration of firearms when coming from other states or after receipt through inheritance or gift - not required in Ohio! Transfer of handguns between residents of different states must be conducted through dealers with a Federal Firearms Licnese. Personal sales of firearms and ensuring transfers occur legally, determining whether the purchaser is a prohibited person. Update on HR45 - still no sponsors have signed on to this bill. Despite the political divisions, both the House and Senate still have pro-gun majorities - it is very unlikely that any bills, or even amendments to bills, would pass that add further infringements on our guaranteed right to keep and bear arms, a right of equal standing with all other rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Example of use of firearm for self-defense, how the Castle Doctrine passed in 2009 may have affected the outcome. National Parks - law passed last year included an amendment that restored the right to keep and bear arms in National Parks, effective Feb 22, 2010. The parks recognize this change. The parks now follow the laws of the state in which the park is located. Law enforcement simply cannot provide protection for individuals, particularly in rural areas. Topics - Special Guest Steve Pierson, defense attorney and show sponsor. When to get an attorney to represent you - earlier is better. If you must defend yourself, call 911 immediately, but make the next call to the attorney who will be defending you. It's difficult to say you're not going to speak to the police, but instead say something to the effect of, "I would like to cooperate, I don't believe I have done anything wrong, but I do have a right to speak with a lawyer and I want to exercise that right." Note that even a police officer involved in a shooting is often advised to speak with a lawyer before addressing the details of the event. "We've of course heard the term before, often referring to someone who doesn't get all their facts before answering. But this is a gun show - and you're talking about really shooting from the hip!"Why would anyone be "shooting from the hip" - is it ever appropriate?
Absolutely - it's an advanced skill, one of several handgun techniques variously called instinctive shooting, point shooting, or target-focused shooting, among others. We teach this technique at SimTrainer in our Advanced Handgun Level 5 class - Spontaneous Assault. Done properly, it is remarkably effective out to about 15 feet. However, as with all advanced skills, doing it safely requires proper training and practice. We strongly recommend that people not try this technique for the first time without the supervision of a qualified, experienced instructor.
